Checklist IOAI PH 2026 National Finals · P1 task
Typhoon Intensity Estimation
Predict a typhoon's central pressure (hPa) from an infrared satellite image.
The task
Using infrared satellite imagery of the Western Pacific from the Digital Typhoon Dataset (Kitamoto Lab, National Institute of Informatics, Japan), contestants build a computer-vision model that estimates central pressure; lower pressure means a stronger storm (about 900 hPa for a super typhoon, 1000 hPa for a tropical storm).
Training: 5,000 labelled images from 2010–2019; test: 1,000 unlabelled images from 2020.
