Checklist IOAI PH 2026 National Finals · P2 task

The Eye of the Storm

Predict maximum sustained wind speed from GOES-16 infrared images, training on Hurricane Beryl and testing on Hurricane Milton.

  • Vision
  • Image regression with domain shift

The task

Contestants act as an automated Dvorak system: 500 labelled images of Hurricane Beryl (June–July 2024, 35–145 kt) are used for training, and wind speeds must be predicted for 500 images of Hurricane Milton (October 2024), which peaked higher (155–160 kt) and went through an eyewall replacement cycle.

Images are GOES-16 ABI Band 13 (clean IR longwave); the model should learn eye formation, symmetry and central dense overcast rather than timestamps.

Abridged by SOTA from the official materials. The official statement has the exact rules, and it wins wherever this summary differs.

At a glance

You get
train.csv (Filename, WindSpeed), test.csv, sample_submission.csv, Atlantic_Finals_Dataset.zip (Beryl/ and Milton/).
You submit
CSV with Filename and WindSpeed (knots).
Scoring
Root Mean Squared Error.
Rules
  • External data strictly prohibited; looking up Milton's observed winds or hard-coding values from timestamps leads to disqualification; code may be audited.
Format
IOAI Philippines 2026 National Finals, Practical 2.
